Sudirman Cup: Chinese Team Advances to Quarterfinals Ahead of Schedule

On April 28, the second matchday of the 2025 Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team Badminton Championships took place at the Phoenix Gymnasium of Xiamen Olympic Sports Center. Team China defeated Hong Kong, China    5-0, securing an early qualification for the quarterfinals.


On the opening day, April 27, China had also swept Algeria 5-0. Facing Hong Kong, China in this match, Team China kept Shi Yuqi in the men's singles position but rotated players for the other four disciplines.

In the mixed doubles, Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping, ranked second in the world, delivered a stable performance against Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau, winning by identical scores of 21-8, 21-8. "It feels amazing to play at home with so many fans cheering for us," said Huang Dongping, who felt increasingly energized on the court.


In the second match, Olympic champion Chen Yufei took to the court in the women's singles and easily defeated Lo Sin Yan 21-8, 21-4. After her return, Chen noted that she is working on gradually regaining her best form, adding, "The feeling today was smoother than during the Asian Championships."


The men's singles clash, anticipated as the most competitive match of the tie, lived up to expectations. Shi Yuqi faced Lee Cheuk Yiu, ranked 21st in the world, battling fiercely for 62 minutes. After winning the first set 21-12, losing the second 20-22, and finally taking the third 21-12, Shi secured the overall victory for Team China. During tough moments, Shi motivated himself by thinking, "Take it point by point, don’t rush. Be meticulous with every shot and stay positive."


Following that, world No. 1 women's doubles pair Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning and Paris Olympics men's doubles silver medalists Liang Weikeng/Wang Chang both claimed straight-set wins over their opponents.


After China's 5-0 victory over Hong Kong, China, and with Thailand also defeating Algeria 5-0 in the same group (Group A), both China and Thailand have secured two wins and advanced to the quarterfinals ahead of schedule.
