Surge in Enterprise Numbers, Emerging Sports Become New Hotspots
2025-04-23

Recently, the General Administration of Sport of China issued a notice announcing the list of 2024 national-level "Specialized, Refined, Differentiated, and Innovative" (referred to as “SRDI”) enterprises in the sports sector. The number of selected enterprises has increased significantly this year, covering a wide range of sports sub-sectors, showcasing the strong momentum in the professionalization, refinement, specialization, and innovation of China's sports industry.

Strict Selection Criteria, Significant Growth in Enterprise Numbers

The selection criteria for national-level SRDI sports enterprises are exceptionally stringent. Companies must meet multiple benchmarks, including specialization, refinement, differentiation, innovation capacity, and industrial chain integration. These rigorous standards have fostered a cohort of enterprises characterized by strong innovation, high technological content, and outstanding market competitiveness. For example, several companies have achieved breakthroughs in the field of smart wearable devices. By leveraging advanced sensor technology and algorithms, they offer precise monitoring and analysis of exercise data for athletes and fitness enthusiasts, helping users better understand their physical condition and performance outcomes.

Over the past few years, the number of SRDI sports enterprises has shown a remarkable upward trend. In 2022, only 49 enterprises made the list; in 2023, the number rose to 80; and in 2024, it surged to 146. This growth not only reflects the rapid development of China's sports industry but also demonstrates the government's strong emphasis on and support for innovation in the sector.

Beyond the increase in quantity, the influence of these enterprises within the sports industry continues to grow. Through innovation-driven development, they are accelerating the upgrading and transformation of the entire industry. An increasing number of companies are prioritizing technological advancement and product R&D, significantly boosting investments in scientific and technological research and driving the sports industry toward greater intelligence, digitization, and sustainability.

Broad Industry Coverage, Emerging Sports as Growth Drivers

The selected SRDI enterprises operate across a diverse range of sectors not only traditional areas such as sports facility manufacturing, fitness equipment development, and sports apparel material production, but also newer domains like bicycle component manufacturing, smart wearable production, and sports rehabilitation equipment development. Additionally, some companies have expanded into innovative areas such as VR-based competitive sports products, sports cameras, drones, and even sports aircraft manufacturing.

This expansion into emerging sports highlights the vibrancy and potential of SRDI enterprises in the sports field. In recent years, outdoor sports have rapidly gained popularity, giving a strong boost to companies involved in cycling, smart wearables, and rehabilitation technology. For instance, VR-based sports experiences leverage virtual reality to provide immersive exercise environments, breaking the constraints of time and space and enabling wider public participation in competitive sports. Meanwhile, the R&D and production of rehabilitation devices offer more scientific and effective recovery solutions for athletes and patients, promoting deeper integration between sports and health care.

Strong Eastern Growth, Promising Western Potential

From a regional perspective, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Beijing, and Shanghai are home to the majority of SRDI sports enterprises, with the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions far outpacing other urban clusters. In contrast, the number of such enterprises in the southwest and northwest regions remains relatively low.

This regional disparity is closely linked to differences in economic development levels, technological innovation capabilities, and the extent of policy support. The more economically developed eastern regions benefit from abundant technological resources and stronger government support for the sports industry, creating favorable environments for enterprise growth. However, the southwest and northwest regions possess unique advantages, such as distinctive sports tourism resources and rich cultural traditions in sports, making them well-positioned to become future growth centers in the industry.

As living standards improve and public health awareness rises, China’s sports industry is embracing unprecedented development opportunities. The government is expected to further enhance support through favorable policies and innovation incentives. SRDI enterprises should seize these opportunities to strengthen technological innovation and product development, thereby boosting their core competitiveness.

National-level SRDI enterprises are a driving force in the advancement of China’s sports industry. Their emergence and growth not only support the structural optimization and upgrading of the sector but also contribute significantly to building a strong sporting nation. Looking ahead, these enterprises are expected to continue leveraging their strengths, achieving outstanding results, and injecting sustained momentum into the development of China’s sports industry.
